CODE128 is a high-density linear barcode that can encode all 128 ASCII characters including numbers, letters, and special characters. It's the most versatile 1D barcode format used in shipping, logistics, and general inventory management.
EAN-13 (European Article Number) is the international product barcode used on retail goods worldwide. It contains 13 digits: a 3-digit country code, manufacturer code, product code, and a check digit. US products use UPC-A which is a subset of EAN-13.
For official retail use, EAN/UPC barcodes must be registered through GS1 (gs1.org) to ensure uniqueness. Barcodes generated here are suitable for internal use, prototypes, and testing. For actual retail distribution, official GS1 registration is required.
Traditional barcodes are 1D (one-dimensional) — they store data only horizontally and hold tens to hundreds of characters. QR codes are 2D (two-dimensional) — they store data in both directions and can hold thousands of characters including URLs, contact info, and more.
The last digit of EAN-13 is a mathematically calculated check digit used to verify the barcode was scanned correctly. It's computed from the first 12 digits using a specific algorithm. If you enter 12 digits, the check digit is calculated automatically.
